Edwin W. Stoughton (1818-1882)

Edwin Wallace Stoughton was a distinguished lawyer in New York. His greatest renown came from a series of patent suits, particularly the patent cases of Charles Goodyear. He defended A. Oakey Hall, mayor of New York City, charged with neglect of official duty. President Grant requested that Stoughton join a commission examining the dispute in electoral votes in the 1876 elections between Tilden and Hayes. As a reward, President Hayes appointed Stoughton U.S. minister to Russia from 1878 to 1879.
