Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896)

Harriet Elizabeth Beecher Stowe was an American writer and humanitarian who was the author of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" (1852). This was the first American novel with a black man as a hero. It exposed the evils of slavery to the American public. Although Stowe was over forty when she wrote her first book, she subsequently wrote an average of a book a year for thirty years. The sixteen-volume "Writings of Harriet Beecher Stowe" appeared in 1896. This is an 1865 engraving for "Our Young Folks."
