John T. Stuart (1807-1885)

John Todd Stuart was a U.S. representative from Illinois and a political mentor and law partner of Abraham Lincoln. Stuart and Lincoln served in the same battalion in the Black Hawk War. From 1837 to 1841 Stuart and Lincoln were close friends and law partners. In 1838 Stuart defeated Stephen A. Douglas in a remarkable contest for U.S. representative, winning by thirty-six out of 36,000 votes. He served from 1839 to 1843. During the Civil War Stuart became a bitter opponent of the Lincoln administration because he abhorred the president's emancipation policy. He was a distant cousin of Mary Todd Lincoln.
