Samuel D. Sturgis (1822-1869) and Family
Samuel Davis Sturgis met his downfall in Nathan Bedford Forrest, the Confederate cavalryman who defeated him at Brice's Crossroads. Union authorities called for an inquiry and Sturgis spent the rest of the war awaiting an assignment. He was mustered out in August, 1865. After the war Sturgis served as colonel in George Custer's 7th Cavalry. In this photo he is shown with his wife, Jerusha Wilcox Sturgis, their children, and their dog, an unusual touch in Civil War photography.
