Edwin V. Sumner (1797-1863)
Edwin Vose Sumner was a major general of volunteers in the Union Army. At age sixty-five he was the oldest Union commander on the field. Sumner was appointed a lieutenant in 1819 and earned two brevets in Mexico. He commanded on the West Coast at the start of the Civil War but was soon called to Washington to head a division under McClellan. Sumner distinguished himself at Seven Pines and was brevetted regular army major general. He died in New York while traveling to his new assignment in the Department of the Missouri.
