John H. Surratt (1844-1916)
John Harrison Surratt was the only member of the Lincoln conspirators to avoid punishment. While he did participate in the early plot to kidnap Lincoln, it is not known whether he was part of the assassination plot. Surratt was accused of making the hole in President Lincoln's theater box door. He escaped to Canada while the other plotters were arrested. His mother, Mary E. Surratt, was hung on scant evidence. Surratt then escaped to Italy and joined the Vatican guard, where he was spotted. He fled to Egypt where he was caught. Surratt was tried but the jury could not reach a decision and he was released.
