Thomas W. Sweeny (1820-1892)
Thomas William Sweeny was an Irish-American career soldier who lost his arm in the Mexican War. He served in both the regular army and with volunteer regiments during the Civil War and was wounded several times. He was ultimately promoted to brigadier general of volunteers. Sweeny was a close friend of Tad Lincoln. A member of the Fenians after the war, he led a group of Irish-Americans in an unsuccessful effort to capture Canada from the British in 1866.
