Terence V. Powderly (1849-1924)

Terence Vincent Powderly was a union leader. A machinist, he joined the Knights of Labor in 1874 and rose through its ranks until he became Grand Master Workman, its highest position, from 1879 to 1893. Powderly was also elected mayor of Scranton three times (1878-84). A lawyer, he was active in the Republican Party. From 1897 to 1901 Powderly was Commissioner General of Immigration. Powderly took many historic photographs of Ellis Island.
