John V. S. L. Pruyn (1811-1877)
John Van Schaick Lansing Pruyn was an American lawyer and educator who was connected with many of the leading financial and railroad enterprises in the United States. He was elected state senator in 1861, accepting the nomination on the condition that no money should be used for the election. At the end of his term he distributed his salary amongst the poor of Albany, New York. He was chancellor of the State University of New York from 1862 until his death.
