Gabriel J. Rains (1803-1881)
Gabriel James Rains was a brigadier general in the Confederate Army. Rains is credited with the first use of land mines and booby traps. Both sides protested against this on ethical grounds. In June 1864 he was named head of the Torpedo Bureau and obtained permission to use land mines around Richmond, Mobile, and Charleston.
