George W. Randolph (1818-1867)
George Wythe Randolph was a Confederate general and secretary of war. He organized a militia group called the Richmond Howitzers after John Brown's raid. He was appointed brigadier general of the CSA in February 1862 and in March he succeeded Judah P. Benjamin as secretary of war. Randolph resigned the following November to return to the field. He had to quit in 1864 because of poor health and eventually died of tuberculosis.
