Henry Reed Rathbone (1837-1911)

Henry Reed Rathbone was appointed by Lincoln to be assistant adjutant general of volunteers, with the rank of major. The Lincolns invited Rathbone and his fiancee Clara Harris, daughter of Senator Ira T. Harris of New York, to accompany them to the theater on April 14, 1865. The couple were eyewitnesses to the assassination. Rathbone later married Clara Harris and they moved to Germany where he lost his mind and murdered her. He spent the rest of his life in a mental hospital.
