"Washington Urging the Countryman to Greater Speed"
George Washington is urgently following an elderly man, who familiar with the countryside, was leading him to Birmingham Meeting House. Washington was anxious to see for himself the surprise location of Cornwallis' British troops just before the Battle of Brandywine, September 11, 1777. This is an illustration from the 1859 book, "The Illustrated Life of George Washington," by J. T. Headley.
