John Fulton Reynolds (1820-1863)

John Fulton Reynolds was a major general of volunteers in the Union Army. A West Pointer, he taught there after the Mexican War. Promoted to major general in 1862, he heard rumors that he was to be given command of the Army of the Potomac. He hurried to Washington and informed Lincoln that he would only accept the post if the strings attached to the capital were cut. Reynolds was passed over. Returning to combat at Gettysburg, Reynolds was killed by a Confederate shot.
