Allison Nelson (1822-1862)
Allison Nelson was a Confederate brigadier general and politician. Before the Civil War, Nelson fought in the Mexican War and in the Cuban War of Independence. In his civilian life, he was elected the mayor of Atlanta and served in the Georgia state legislature. After he moved to Texas, he also served in the Texas state legislature. Nelson was commissioned colonel of the 10th Texas Infantry in 1861 and was given command of a brigade at Devall's Bluff, Arkansas. He was appointed brigadier general in 1862. Nelson died less than a month later from an illness while still in the field.
