Florence Nightingale (1820-1910)
She was an English nurse and the founder of trained nursing as a profession for women. In 1854, she organized a unit of 38 women nurses for service in the Crimean War. Nightingale's life was dedicated to the care of the sick and war wounded. In 1907 the king conferred on her the Order of Merit. She was the first woman ever to receive it.
