John Strong Newberry (1822-1892)
John S. Newberry was a paleontologist, geologist and physician who participated in the Pacific Railroad Survey and other expeditions that explored the West. He was the first scientist to explore the bottom of the Grand Canyon. During the Civil War, he was a member of the U. S. Sanitary Commission which assisted wounded and sick Union soldiers. Newberry was an associate at the Smithsonian Institution and a longtime professor at Columbia University.
