Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880)

Jacques Offenbach was a composer who created a type of light burlesque French comic opera known as the operetta. Offenbach's real name was Jakob Wiener. He was the son of a cantor in Germany and trained at the Paris Conservatory. In his early career he was a virtuoso cellist. Offenbach became a conductor at the Theatre Francais. Five years later he rented his own theater where his operettas and comic operas were performed. His "Orpheus in the Underworld" (1858) is famous for introducing the can-can.
