James Oakes (1826-1910)
James Oakes was a brevet brigadier general in the U.S. Army during the Civil War. He graduated West Point in 1846 and served in the Mexican War, where he was wounded twice. During the Civil War he commanded cavalry regiments but was also engaged in recruiting. He was brevetted brigadier general in the regular army in 1865 for his recruiting service.
