Edward O. C. Ord (1818-1883)

Edward Otho Cresap Ord was a major general in the Union Army. A West Point graduate, Ord fought in the Mexican War and took part in the capture of John Brown at Harpers Ferry in 1859. Named brigadier general of volunteers in 1861, he was appointed by Grant to take over the 13th corps from John A. McClernand in 1863. He received brevets for Dranesville, Iuka, Hatchie (where he was wounded), and Fort Harrison (where he was again wounded), for which he was brevetted major general. Ord remained in the Regular Army after the war and was promoted to brigadier general in 1866. He was photographed here circa 1880, wearing his uniform and a coat with a fur collar.
