Edward O. C. Ord (1818-1883) and Family

General Edward Otho Cresap Ord is photographed here with his wife, Mary Mercer Thompson, and his young only daughter, in Richmond, Virginia. This photograph was taken sometime after the Civil War and they are sitting in front of the table on which General Lee signed his surrender. A West Point graduate, Ord fought in the Mexican War and took part in the capture of John Brown at Harpers Ferry in 1859. In the Civil War, he was named brigadier general of volunteers in 1861, and was ultimately brevetted major general. Ord remained in the Regular Army after the war and was promoted to brigadier general in 1866.
