James Otis (1725-1783)

James Otis was a politician and patriot during the period leading up to the American Revolution. He helped formulate the colonists' grievances against the British government in the 1760s. The famous saying, "Taxation without representation is tyranny," is attributed to Otis. Otis went insane and later died when struck by a bolt of lightning. This engraving is based upon a painting by Alonzo Chappel.
