Alphonso Taft (1810-1891)
Alphonso Taft was the secretary of war (1876) and attorney general (1876-77) under President Grant. Taft also served as U.S. minister to Austria-Hungary and Russia. He was appointed judge of the Cincinnati Superior Court and served from 1865 to 1872. He was the father of William Howard Taft, the twenty-seventh president of the United States.
