Wendell Phillips (1811-1884)

Wendell Phillips was an American reformer and orator who devoted his life to fighting for the abolition of slavery. He believed that the government owed blacks not merely their freedom, but land, education, and full civil rights as well. Phillips is most often remembered for his role as president and chief spokesman of the American Anti-Slavery Society, but he was a strong advocate of many other social reforms including prohibition, women’s suffrage, the abolition of capital punishment, and the rights of labor.
