Samuel Phelps (1804-1878)
Samuel Phelps was an English actor and theater manager. He made his London debut in 1837 as Shylock in the "Merchant of Venice," at the Haymarket Theatre. Phelps spent six years at the Haymarket, Drury Lane, and Covent Garden theaters. In 1844 he became theatrical director of Sadler's Wells, where he remained for twenty years, both acting and directing. During his tenure he produced thirty-four Shakespeare plays. Despite his fondness for tragic characters he excelled in comic roles.
