Benjamin Pierce
Benjamin Pierce was a graduate of Harvard University and a member of the faculty there for forty-nine years. Pierce was named head of the Mathematics Department in 1833. He was named University Professor of Mathematics in 1836. He was also a founder of the Harvard Observatory and the National Academy of Sciences. Pierce was recognized in his time as one of America's leading mathematicians.
