Gideon J. Pillow (1806-1878)

Gideon Johnson Pillow was a brigadier general in the Confederate Army. Polk appointed him major general during the Mexican War. When the Civil War broke out, Pillow was appointed major general of the Tennessee troops, which were subsequently transferred to the Confederate Army, much to Pillow's unhappiness. When defeated by Grant at Fort Donelson, Pillow passed his command to Buckner, his junior, and escaped across the river. Pillow was reprimanded and suspended.
