George Washington helps to lift the dead General Edward Braddock into a cart. Washington was Braddock's aide-de-camp during the 1755 British campaign to drive the French out of the Ohio valley. This is an illustration from the May 1893 issue of Scribner's Magazine. It was engraved by C. W. Chadwick after a drawing by Howard Pyle.
