Luke P. Poland (1815-1887)
Luke Potter Poland was a lawyer, judge, and politician from Vermont. Potter served as a judge on the Vermont Supreme Court from 1848 until 1865. He resigned to fill out the unexpired term of a U.S. senator who had died. One of his greatest achievements as senator was to revise and consolidate the federal statutes. He then served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1867 until 1875. Poland was a major figure in the development of the Republican Reconstruction measures and in the investigation of the Ku Klux Klan.
