Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) and Wife Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe (1822-1847)
On the left is a photo of Edgar Allan Poe, an American short-story writer, poet, critic, and editor, famous for his cultivation of mystery and the macabre in stories such as "The Raven." On the right is a painting of his thirteen-year-old cousin, Virginia, who married him in 1834, when they took out a marriage license. Virginia died of tuberculosis in 1847. Poe died of alcoholism two years later.
