Henry Codman Potter (1835-1908)
Henry Codman Potter was a Protestant Episcopal bishop and nephew of Bishop Horatio Potter. Like his uncle he was a consummate diplomat and managed to calm sectarian conflicts. While rector of Grace Church in New York he turned a fashionable parish into a center of social ministry. He criticized corruption in public administration, including the police force. He realized his dream of building a great cathedral: the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.
