Marshall O. Roberts (1814-1880)
Marshall Owen Roberts was a wealthy capitalist. He rose to prominence in 1847 when he took over a government contract subsidizing mail steamships. When the Civil War broke out, Roberts made huge profits by selling boats to the Federal government. Congress later investigated charges of corruption but nothing was ever done. Roberts was active in Republican politics but never held an elected office. He gave Mrs. Lincoln $10,000 after the assassination.
