William Barton Rogers (1804-1882)
William Barton Rogers was a geologist and an educator. When his father died in 1818 Rogers succeeded to his professorship of natural philosophy and chemistry at the College of William and Mary. Rogers soon left for the University of Virginia, but was discontented and felt the need for greater stimulation. He moved to Boston and began plans for a polytechnic school. In 1861 the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was founded and Rogers was elected its first president (1862-70 and 1878-81).
