Elihu Root (1845-1937)
Elihu Root was a prominent lawyer, Republican politician, U.S. cabinet officer and diplomat. He served as secretary of war (18991904) under Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. Root's accomplishments included improving the efficiency of the War Department, reforming the organization of the army, and establishing the Army War College. Root became secretary of state under Roosevelt in 1905, serving until 1909. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912 in recognition of his efforts toward international peace. He also served as a U.S. senator from New York during the years 1909 until 1915.
