William S. Rosecrans (1819-1898)
William Starke Rosecrans graduated fifth in the West Point class of 1842. He was the roommate of James Longstreet and A. P. Stewart, who both fought as generals for the Confederacy. Rosecrans fought for the Union, serving as commander of the Army of the Cumberland. But he was dismissed as a result of several tactical errors. After the war he was U.S. minister to Mexico (186869) and a U.S. Congressman from California (188185). Here he is seated with a telescope and map.
