Edmund G. Ross (1826-1907)

Edmund Gibson Ross was a journalist and Republican senator from Kansas. He is best remembered as the man who cast his vote against the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson in 1868. His vote was considered the one essential for the presidentÂ’s acquittal and Ross was vilified by Republicans for his stand. He refused to back down. Ross eventually became a Democrat.
