Edmund Ruffin's House in Virginia

Edmund Ruffin (1794-1865), a veteran of the War of 1812, was a plantation owner and an agricultural reformer. He became a secession fanatic and urged southerners to form a separate country. Ruffin claimed to be the first to fire a shot at Fort Sumter. When Lee surrendered at Appomattox Ruffin committed suicide rather than become a U.S. citizen.
