Jeremiah M. Rusk (1830-1893)
Jeremiah McLain Rusk served as a lieutenant colonel in the Twenty-fifth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and was brevetted brigadier general for "conspicuous gallantry." He became a prominent Republican politician and was popularly known as "Uncle Jerry." Rusk served as the U.S. Representative from Wisconsin (1871-77) and as Wisconsin's governor (1882-89). President Benjamin Harrison appointed him U.S. secretary of agriculture in 1889 and he served until 1893.
