W. A. C. Ryan

W. A. C. Ryan became a participant in the Virginius Affair. Ryan was a civilian passenger aboard the steamer "Virginius," which was fraudulently flying the American flag as it carried weapons to the Cubans. The Spanish captured the ship on October 31, 1873, and fifty-three of the crew and passengers were executed. Ryan escaped execution only to be murdered at Santiago del Cuba on November 4, 1873.
