Incidents in the Defeat and Capture of Chief Joseph

These sketches by G. M. Holland from page 141 of the November 3, 1877 issue of "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper" depict events in Montana during the Nez Percé War, including incidents in the defeat and capture of Chief Joseph by General Nelson A. Miles. The scenes are entitled: General Miles charging the Indian Camp - the dash into the ravine; Native American women coddling Lieutenant Jerome in a rifle-pit, while held as hostage; A refuge of Native American women during the battle; "Me no want to kill a man who can't shoot"; and Surrender of Chief Joseph and his principal warriors at General Miles' headquarters, October 5-6.
