Ignace Paderewski (1869-1941)

Ignace Jan Paderewski was a Polish pianist, composer, and statesman. He debuted in Vienna in 1871. His sensitive playing won him greater popularity than any pianist since Franz Liszt. He composed orchestral music, an opera, a cantata, a violin sonata, and piano pieces. A dedicated patriot, he led Polish governments in 1919 and in 1940-41 (from exile). He gave most of his large fortune to Poland, needy musicians, and Jewish refugees.
