William R. Shafter (1835-1906)
William Rufus Shafter served as a Union Army officer with the Michigan Infantry. He was wounded in action at Fair Oaks, for which he received a Medal of Honor and was brevetted brigadier general of volunteers. After the Civil War, Shafter served as a lieutenant colonel on the Western frontier. He was commissioned a brigadier general and commanded the Department of California. In the Spanish American War and now a Major General, Shafter commanded the 5th Corps of the U.S. Army that invaded Cuba in 1898.
