Joseph O. Shelby (1830-1897)
Joseph O. "Jo" Shelby was a Confederate brigadier general during the Civil War. He was a rich slaveholder who entered the Confederate Army as a captain of cavalry. Shelby and General John Marmaduke raided Springfield, Missouri, together with Quantrill's bushwhackers. In 1863 Shelby was wounded at Helena, Arkansas, and was subsequently appointed brigadier general. At the close of the Civil War he took his troops to Mexico rather than surrender and unsuccessfully offered his services to both sides. In 1893 President Cleveland appointed Shelby U.S. Marshal.
