James S. Palmer (1810-1867)

James Shedden Palmer was a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy. In September 1861 Palmer, commanding the "Iroquois," was ordered to capture the Confederate ship "Sumter." Although he found and blockaded the "Sumter," it escaped, which resulted in his losing his command. He continued to have bad luck. Palmer was assigned the command of the "Susquehanna" in December 1865 and was promoted to rear admiral in 1866. Palmer was present in the Virgin Islands when St. Thomas was devastated by an earthquake in 1867. As a result of his efforts on behalf of the island inhabitants, he was stricken with yellow fever and died within a few days.
