Lord Palmerston (1784-1865)
Lord Palmerston was a member of Great Britain's House of Commons from 1807 until his death, excepting only a few months. He was foreign secretary three times (1830-34, 1835-41, and 1846-51). His foreign policy consisted of the principle that Great Britain had no permanent allies, only permanent interests. Palmerston was prime minister from 1855 to 1865. Although a liberal Whig, Palmerston was a staunch conservative: he defended the propertied classes and opposed voting rights for working people.
