Herbert A. Slade (b.1855)
Herbert A. "Maori" Slade was a heavyweight boxer born in New Zealand. His father was Irish and his mother was Maori. Slade grew up on a farm and became a butcher. Jem Mace, another great boxer, became his manager in 1881. They went to the U.S. in January 1883 and Slade fought all over the country.
