Hiram Paulding (1797-1878)
Hiram Paulding was a rear admiral in the United States Navy. At the Battle of Lake Champlain (1813), the young Paulding was acting lieutenant on the Ticonderoga; he was awarded monies and a sword from Congress for his heroism. He received his education at a military academy in Norwich, Vermont, graduating with the class of 1823. Although he retired in 1861, with promotion to rear admiral, he continued his naval service throughout the Civil War.
