George Peabody (1795-1869)
George Peabody was a dry-goods importer, a commodities dealer, and an international financier who was also a great philanthropist. He was able to market American securities in London, to accrue great profits for his firm, and to help his nation expand. Peabody was a great supporter of the sciences in America and funded museums at Yale and Harvard. After the Civil War he established the Peabody Education Fund to improve education in the South.
