John C. Pemberton (1814-1881)

John Clifford Pemberton, a native of Philadelphia, was a Confederate general who had served with Ulysses S. Grant in the Mexican War. He resigned to fight in his wife's home state, Virginia, even though his brothers were fighting for the North. He rapidly rose through the ranks to the position of lieutenant general (October, 1862). During the Vicksburg Campaign he was confused both by Grant's ingenious strategy and also by conflicting orders from his superiors and had to surrender. After the defeats of Gettysburg and Vicksburg, Southerners suspected treason, but there is no indication that Pemberton was guilty. He resigned in May, 1864.
