James M. Shackelford (1827-1909)

James Murrell Shackelford was a Union general from Kentucky. He served in the Mexican War and was then appointed colonel in 1861. Shackelford was named brigadier general of volunteers in 1863. He resigned unexpectedly in 1864 because of the death of his wife. Appointed judge of the U.S. Court for Indian Territory, he later became the lawyer for the Choctaw Nation in 1893.
